The Carny

Played in an open C tuning. Which is something like this- CGDGBe- first string tuned down to a low C, and second low G.

Just bar everything and strum down.

the pattern goes something like this- 0-4-4-0-4-4-0-4-4 and sometimes switches up to 0-6-6-0-6- 6-0-6-6- and so on... A circus feeling with it. It would be kind of pointless to try to match up the words with the guitar as they don't have a regular match, so just play along Ītil you catch on...

Ain't it funny how things go?

Your Funeral... My Trial

Transcribed by O.W.

The song has two chords basically, and revolves around the change from G7 to Amin. This is really a song for piano, but can be played on guitar. A tab of recommended voicings follows the chord part.

Notes in () indicate single notes, not chords. In typical Nick fashion, the chords don't match up exactly with the words; for timing listen to the record. Finally, during the verse the notes in () are played by the hammond, while the guitar and piano play the chords. If you don't happen to have six hands, just do it all on piano.

Intro:

(F) Am (C) (A) Am (A)
(F) Am (C) (A) Am (A)
 G (G) (B) (D)

Repeat this twice, verse starts after second (D)

(F) Am (C) (A) Am
        I am a crooked man

(F) Am (C) (A) Am
I've walked a crooked mile

G (G) (B)
night, the shameless widow

(D) (F) Am (C) (A) Am
doffed her weeds in a pile

(F) Am Am
the stars all winked at me

     Am Am
they shamed a child

G (G) (B) (D) (F) Am
    your funeral my trial

(F) Am (C) (A) Am
 a thousand Marys lured me

(F) Am (C) (A) Am
into gulleys damp with clover

G (G) (B) (D) (F)
bird with crooked wing cast

Am (C) (A) Am
its wicked shadow over

(F) Am Am Am
 a bauble moon did mock

(F) Am Am Am Am
and trinket stars did smile

G (G) (B) (D) (F) Am
    your funeral my trial

Third verse is the same, and I'm too lazy to type it out AGAIN...

There's a hammond solo after the third verse, after which the intro part comes back, BUT only the Amin part, repeating three or four times without the G part.

Advice for playing this song on guitar: don't. Get a piano. But if you must..

     Am G

E|---1-0-----0--- E|---3---------1
B|-----1-1---1--- B|---3-----0-3--
G|-----2---2-2-2- x 2 then G|---0---0------
D|-----2-----2--- D|---0-0--------
A|-----0-----0--- A|---2----------
E|-----x-----x--- E|---3----------

Any corrections and additions will be welcomed (so long as they are politely phrased, of course).
