On Johnny Suede

An article in the Guardian (UK) 20th March, 1998 about pop stars appearing in films contained a Nick Cave mention:

Musicians still end up giving their best performances playing something closest to themselves (Kris Kristofferson and Cher) have been exceptions). "You become so aware of yourself, so conscious of the way you look," says Nick Cave, whose cinematic ventures include Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire and Tom di Cillo's Johnny Suede. "The musicians who are in demand to star in films are the ones who have built up a solid image for themselves, but it's hard to step out of that image. There's so much detrimental baggage."

"I remember having one of the most horrendous moments of my career in front of the camera," winces Cave. "It was while I was shooting Johnny Suede with Tom di Cillo. I walked onto the set in this foot-high blonde wig and everyone was wearing underpants on their head. The director said, 'Hey man, isn't it funny?' I'm like 'No, it isn't funny and it's not in the script!' It was a crisis point which sums up acting for me. I'm very precious about what I do and to surrender control like that, become a cog in the machinery, I find very disturbing."
