Thursday, January 22, 2004Web Power Tools@ 03 pm | PermaLinkSo last night, Nick Finck and I presented a great set of tools for Web development at the DevGroup Meeting. I've written up the notes from the Web Power Tools meeting as one of my WebDev articles. I even got the following note afterwards: THANK YOU for a great DevGroup presentation, last night. We've decided you are "fated" to be a teacher. Thank you for sharing. Well that was sure nice.
Tuesday, January 20, 2004Bad Aliasing@ 11 pm | PermaLinkOkay this doesn't make a lot of sense.
I installed OpenOffice.org, the open-source office suite. It uses the X11 environment, which I know is different from the Aqua environment, but I don't know what's up with the anti-aliasing artifacts that I'm seeing. They look like they *might* support some sort of sub-pixel smoothing technology on an LCD display. But I'm on a CRT so it just sucks. I'm actually hoping that I can look at this entry on my iBook's screen and see a difference in the image above. Maybe there's a setting somewhere that I can re-configure. Not that OO.o is anywhere near fast enough to actually work for me on the Blue and White G3...

Monday, January 5, 2004Color Theory@ 08 pm | PermaLinkThis and the Snowman House of Horror have always been my favorite Calvin and Hobbs cartoons. Calvin: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they have color film back then? Dad: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs ARE in color. It's just the WORLD was black and white then. Calvin: Really? Dad: Yep. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too. Calvin: That's really weird. Dad: Well, truth is stranger than fiction. Calvin: But then why are old PAINTINGS in color?! If the world was black and white, wouldn't artists have painted it that way? Dad: Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane. Calvin: But... but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn't their paints have been shades of gray back then? Dad: Of course, but they turned colors like everything else in the '30s. Calvin: So why didn't old black and white photos turn color too? Dad: Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember?
