West Country Girl

Info in detail about West Country Girl.

On the 14 Stations:
As far as I know the 14 stations are not taken directly from the Bible (i.e. the Bible doesn't specifiy 14 stations explicitly), it's just developed as part of Christian tradition.

During Lent you are supposed to follow the way of the cross, which involves contemplating 14 incidents and saying appropriate prayers. In brief, the 14 stations are:

  1. Jesus is condemned to death
  2. Jesus receives his cross
  3. Jesus falls the first time
  4. Jesus meets his mother
  5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the cross
  6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
  7. Jesus falls the second time
  8. Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem
  9. Jesus falls the third time
  10. Jesus is stripped of his garments
  11. Jesus is nailed to the cross
  12. Jesus dies upon the cross
  13. Jesus is taken down from the cross and laid in the arms of his mother
  14. Jesus is laid in the sepulchre

At his performance at the Barbican in London 31/10/97, Nick changed the last line of West Country Girl:

A West country girl with a big fat cat That looks into her eyes of green And meows: "He loves you" and meows again

to:

A West country girl with a big fat cat That looks into her eyes of green And meows: "He loves you, Polly Jean."
