Monday, October 29, 2001Upgrade of the OS@ 12 pm | PermaLinkI've finally made the upgrade. It took me a while to plan it out and get comfortable, but step-by-step I went through and got my machine prepared and organized, got everything in just the right place s that if I hit a critica problem, I could switch back at a moment's notice. It took the better part of both weekend mornings, but I finally got my Blue and White G3, up and running with its new operating sytem. That's right. I've gone all the way from MacOS 8.6 to MacOS 9.1 (nearly the final paragraph). Oh yes, we're talking cutting edge here. :) I think most people would expect me to have MacOS X installed and running full time or the latest gadget and software and hardware, but that's really not my style. I let things settle in and have other people work out the issues and I wait for the slings and arrows to die down. Then I'll peek around at the new stuff and bring it up online on a machine that I actually need to use. Other machines, I could give a rip about. But my main Mac -- that's something I'm careful about. And now I'm setup to get Mac OS X as soon as I feel that it's good for me. I will certianly be waiting out 10.1 -- my G3 has hardware-based DVD playback which 10.1 doesn't support. It sounds like it will be coming however, and that's when I think I'll pounce. Of course by then I may have an iBook, so it will be okay to hold off on upgrading the G3...

Wednesday, October 24, 2001Weblog Pinger Built-in to Greymatter@ 08 pm | PermaLinkThe Weblog aggregator at Weblogs.com changed it's method of polling RSS files for updates in October, 2001. In order to quickly patch Greymatter to notify the Weblogs.com system, I took Aaron's Bookmarklet for notification and tossed it into GreyMatter's main script 'gm.cgi'. The end result is that after I've added a new entry, I have a button I can use to notify Weblogs.com to come see my RSS file. I've made a modification to the Greymatter main script. I've built a page that explains the procedure. It's quite simple, simply a change to one line in the gm.cgi script. Enjoy! Previously, that same day...GreyMatter to Weblogs.com@ 04 pm | PermaLinkI think I've figured out a was to make GreyMatter ping Weblogs.com to notify it of a new entry being added. Wish me luck. Previously, that same day...Novell GroupWise@ 03 pm | PermaLinkNovell GroupWise is a total interface nightmare. The Interface Mafia would have a hayday with it. This thing has this 'Include Your Signature' dialog box with a [x] check box that activates or deactivates the signature area. The actual buttons are Yes or No, but this odd checkbox just hangs out, doing nothing. Should I even mention how, recently, the dialog boxes have started showing up in three different places on screen? Top Center, Middle Center, Bottom Center. To finish sending a piece of mail, I now hit 3 different confirmation buttons, in the upper left of a dialog, one in the lower right of a second dialog and one in the lower center of the third. It's nuts! I hate Groupwise!
Saturday, October 20, 2001Layers with Simple HTML@ 05 pm | PermaLinkI've been working up an article that encapsulates how I've used tables and simple HTML to produce layered effects and flexible layouts. I still need to do more proofreading and maybe add some more examples, but I'd love to get some feedback on it. It's more geared towards intermediate HTML developers, though there are are a number of techniques that I think are pretty unique to how I've used images on my sites. I'd love to hear any comments or critiques on the article. It's in my WebDev section, though it's not linked anywhere but here. Layers With Simple HTML.
Thursday, October 18, 2001Last day to read@ 10 am | PermaLinkIt's the last day to read my article on A List Apart. Enjoy it while it lasts... :) I've gotten a couple of notes on it that have been very nice. I've also been pretty vigilant in watching the discussion board, though there hasn't been much activity there, either. It wasn't a very controversial topic, so I guess it didn't bring out much typing. Next time, I'll write about why everyone should still use tables for layout. That ought to raise some hackles...
