Talk about Iraq, Not Newtons

I sent this to the NewtonTalk list, hoping to fork off the political discussions from the Newton-oriented subject matter:

I hope everyone is sending out Private notes to anyone who is posting about off-topic threads asking them not to post *OR RESPOND* to off topic threads.

If you wish to discuss this, please follow this link to a message board which requires no sign-up to post:

http://www.quicktopic.com/20/H/NPZKqDGRuvkv

This seemed like a great way of diffusing the thread, and I think it's worked, so far.

AppleShare Error 5002

Last week I kept getting an AppleShare Error -5002 whenever I would try to connect to our Windows 2000 file server from my Mac OS X iBook.

I wasn't able to diagnose it for a while, but eventually, I switched to using SMB to connect rather than AFP. After I did that I was able to connect but the bug kept bugging me.

I noted that if I logged on as my Backup User, I could connect using AppleShare just fine, so I figured I messed something up in the preferences of just my user account, rather than some system-wide setting.

Eventually, I rebooted my iBook into OS 9 and poked around my "/Users/~[user]/Library/" and found the file ".GlobalPreferences.plist" which seems to be a total dumping ground for Apple's own sub-systems. (Note the "." at the start of the file name which hides it from the OS X Finder, but not from the OS 9 Finder.)

I compared the .GP.plist for a new user to that of my regular account, and lo and behold, the new user .GP.plist was virtually empty. So I guessed that I could remove almost anything I wanted to out of the .GP.plist for my regular user and the worst I'd have to worry about was reseting some System Preferences.

This is what I did (while running OS 9):

1) I made a backup of the ".GlobalPreferences.plist" just in case.

2) Inside of the .GlobalPreferences.plist I found the block of Key & Dict that was for AppleShareClientCore. (I've included it in the Read More section.)

3) I deleted the <key> </key> and everything inside the <dict></dict> from the .GlobalPreferences.plist

4) I saved the .GlobalPreferences.plist file and rebooted back into X.

5) I tried connecting (via AppleShare/AFP) and it worked.

Now, I'm virtually certain that you could do this while running OS X as well, so if you can't run 9, don't worry.

I would recommend at least Logging out, if not rebooting after you save the changes. I don't know if these preferences get cached in memory or not, so it just seems like the safe thing to do.

Gift Idea

Hey this looks pretty cool: EyeLighter and it makes a lot of sense. I think it's a great way of using a good bright LED.

this is just another example of low power electronics doing cool things. LEDs, Solar Cells, and rechargable batteries are all on the verge of doing more cool things.

Medical thoughts

What if...

What if being a nice guy is just a medical condition?

A truly Canadian Apology to the USA... Courtesy of Rick Mercer from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, CBC Television:

"On behalf of Canadians everywhere I'd like to offer an apology to the United States of America. We haven't been getting along very well recently and for that, I am truly sorry. I'm sorry we called George Bush a moron. He is a moron but, it wasn't nice of us to point it out. If it's any consolation, the fact that he's a moron shouldn't reflect poorly on the people of America. After all it's not like you actually elected him.

"I'm sorry about our softwood lumber. Just because we have more trees than you doesn't give us the right to sell you lumber that's cheaper and better than your own.

"I'm sorry we beat you in Olympic hockey. In our defence I guess our excuse would be that our team was much, much, much, much better than yours.

"I'm sorry we burnt down your White House during the war of 1812. I notice you've rebuilt it! It's Very Nice.

"I'm sorry about your beer. I know we had nothing to do with your beer but, we feel your pain.

"I'm sorry about our waffling on Iraq. I mean, when you're going up against a crazed dictator, you want to have your friends by your side. I realize it took more than two years before you guys pitched in against Hitler, but that was different. Everyone knew he had weapons.

"And finally on behalf of all Canadians, I'm sorry that we're constantly apologizing for things in a passive-aggressive way which is really a thinly veiled criticism. I sincerely hope that you're not upset over this. We've seen what you do to countries you get upset with."

Absurd Power outlets

Yes Joel, 4 outlets each foot is absurd. It would be ugly, and absurd.

A far better idea would be outlets *in the floor* on a 0.75 meter grid or so. Stuffing things up against the wall means you're facing the wall all the time. I would love to have my desk facing *into* the room, not the wall.

Laws of Tenth Century Iceland

Interesting article on the 'Free State' of Iceland that last from the mid 900's to the 1200's.

I especially enjoyed the assertions that the 3 centuries that the nation survived without a government is longer than the US has been around.

Woo Hoo WiFi

C-Net, aka news.com.com, has an article noting a report that says Portland (w/ Vancouver) is the most *unwired* city in America. And yet they don't even mention PersonalTelco at all! For shame! It looks like the "reporter" simply interviewed the Press Release rather than doing any actual research. At least the Oregonian picked it up.

Newton Goodness

Imagine if you will a world in which the Newton could seemlessly interatice with XML applications:

[The members of the DECL Group] are very pleased to announce DCL PrelimBinaries.

These binaries exhibit some of the coolest features of the Desktop Connection Library, our long-term project aimed at replacing Apple's libraries and applications to connect to and transfer data with the Newtons.

It includes:

  • NewtonScript DTD that explains how to represent Newton data in XML
  • NSOF to XML converter, a MacOS and MacOS X application to convert data from the Newton format (in .nwt attachments for example) to XML
  • Notes XSL to convert Newton Notes from abstract XML to readable XHTML and an applescript droplet to easily use it
  • Dock TCP/IP with ZeroConf support
  • Delivery, a MacOS X package installer with AppleTalk and RendezVous

You'll find them on the official DCL home page:
http://www.kallisys.com/newton/dcl/

Of course, you can expect more from the DCL Group in the next weeks.

Idea Dump

From what I know of martial arts (not much) I believe Judo is most in line with my own personal philosophies and non-conscious actions.

You should go to Pocket-Monkey and challenge me to a game of Go. I've never played Go before, so I'm an easy mark.

Reading Books makes me want to Write Books.

I want to start a website called 'nonphase.com'. The site would review events and publications at periods of 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years and 4 years after they occured.

For the Record

For the record: I started Dwelling (nee 'Notes') in 1998.

For the record: I created a Wireless Internet Publishing (click on the second link) platform in early 2001, well before the term 'moblog' was ever uttered.

For the record: I have used a Wiki as a discussion board for my site and for my journal since 2001.

I just thought you should know and I should remember.
