The Onion: What happened to your solo career? After the second album (1992's Mysterio), it seemed to just fade away.Ian McCulloch: It just didn't seem worth it, you know? At that point I knew I was looking for something else. Some songs on the solo albums were good, and there were some really good lyrics, but there was also a lot of confusion. I didn't really know what I was looking for--until I met up with Will and heard him play guitar again. I never liked putting out records as Ian McCulloch. Still, I'm not done. I'll have a comeback in the year 2000. I'll come back as the Sinatra of the 21st century. I want to get people to write songs for me, though, people like Nick Cave. But that's a ways off.

Nick appears in a "Most Intriguing People of 1997" list published in the December 15th "Who Weekly" [Aust]. The article dances mainly around the death of Michael Hutchence, talking about Nick's request not to have his performance of "Into My Arms" televised.
"...it is another small triumph for the integrity in the enigmatic life of the boy from country Victoria who, after releasing more than 15 albums, is perhaps perversely best known for "Where The Wild Roses Grow", his 1995 waltz with Kylie Minogue."

1. Dino Scatena's unauthorized biography of Kylie is now available from Penguin and contains a few pages of NC related stuff. I haven't bought it myself, just had a quick flick through.
2. The December 97 issue of Record Collector lists the release of a book + spoken word CD: "Post-Punk Diary 1980-82" by George Gimarc, stating "the follow-up to Gimarc's day-by-day account of the vintage punk years comes with a limited edition CD featuring spoken-word commentary from many of the era's leading lights, including The Ramones, Squeeze, The Birthday Party and The Cure."
